How to Use a Smartphone as a Modem

Photobucket

Data modems are built into most mobile phones these days, and if you want to get online through the use of your mobile phone you will need a connection kit, which you can get from your wireless carrier, because your phone will need to be connected to your computer.  You will also need your ISP information which you can also get from your wireless carrier.  Internet speeds may be as low as 56K, but carriers like Verizon are beginning to implement 3G which will be much faster.

If you have these things, then first connect your phone to your computer with the USB cable.

Your computer will know that something new has been connected and begin the new hardware wizard.  If your phone came with a cd you will probably need to use it in this case.  If you have no cd, do not worry, you should be able to get the drivers you need by Googling them.  Find the appropriate drivers for your model, install them, and then point the new hardware wizard in their direction.

Your computer should recognize your phone as a modem right away.  If you have a cd it may have the connection software on it that you need.  Again, if you don’t have a cd there is still no reason for worry.  You may be able to download what you need from your carriers website.  Download it, install it, and you should be online.  Your connection speeds will depend upon your plan, as well as your location.

If you still can’t get online because you don’t have any connection software, get the phone number of your network from the modems dial up properties, or you can get on through AOL, Earthlink, or NetZero.
